Dogs from the past

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food and water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they miss someone very special to them; who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. The bright eyes are intent; the eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to break away from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. YOU have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

THEN YOU CROSS RAINBOW BRIDGE TOGETHER . . .

Ch. Westchow's Dan Tana

My first Champion was Ch. Westchow's Dan Tana. He finished with a four and a five point major. Danny was bred by Don and Emma West.

They will not go quietly,
the dogs who've shared our lives.
In subtle ways they let us know
their spirit still survives.
Old habits still make us think
we hear a barking at the door.
Or step back when we drop
a tasty morsel on the floor.
Our feet still go around the place
the food dish used to be,
And, sometimes, coming home at night,
we miss them terribly.
And although time may bring new friends
and a new food dish to fill,
That one place in our hearts
belongs to them. . .
and always will.

Ch. Dandylion Amaretto CDCh. Dandylion Amaretto CD

My next Champion was Ch. Dandylion Amaretto, CD (Ch. Chinabear Gillian X Ch. Chinabear Strictly Tabu). She actually completed her Companion Dog degree first. I finished her Championship exactly one year later at the same show. Amy was bred by Virginia Treider.

What is dying?
I am standing on the seasore.
A ship sails and spreads her white sails to the morning breeze
and starts for the ocean.
She is an object of beauty and I stand watching her
'til at last, she fades on the horizon.

And someone at my side says, "She is gone."

Gone where?

Gone from my sight, that is all.
She is just as large in the masts, hull and spars
as she was when I saw her
And just as able to bear her load of living freight to its destination.

The diminished size and total loss of sight is in me, not her;
and just at the moment when someone at my side says, "She is gone,"
There are others who are watching her coming
and other voices take up a glad shout
"There she comes!"

and that is DYING.

DEATH is nothing at all.
I have only slipped away to the next room.
I am me and you are you, whatever we were to each other we are that still.

Call me by my old familiar name.
Speak to me in the easy way which you always used.
Put no difference into your tone.
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow.
Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together.

Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.
Let my name be ever a household word that it always was.
Let it be spoken without effort, without the ghost of a shadow in it.
Life means more than it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was. There is

absolute unbroken continuity...

Why should I be out of your mind because I am out of your sight?
I am but waiting for you, for an interval somewhere, very near, just around the corner.

All is well.

Ch. Chinabear Strictly Tabu

I also showed Amy's dam, Ch. Chinabear Strictly Tabu to her Championship. After she was retired from breeding, I convinced her owner, Virginia Treider, to let me show her. Tabu finished in seven shows at seven years of age.

Ch Sunburst Totally Jazzed

Ch. Sunburst Totally Jazzed was the first dog I co-owned with Harvey and Penny Kent. I enjoyed showing him for the time that I "borrowed" him.

Here, come sit beside us for awhile,
and let me tell you about this old friend of mine.
She might look tattered or maybe old
But I won't say goodbye until you've been told.
She had the brightest eyes I had ever seen,
And wore a beautiful fur coat that would out shine a queen.
She was never prissy but walked with an aire ......
And oh so polite, you could take her most anywhere.
She could run like the wind and could catch anything she chased
But she protected and sat with me when I had problems to face.
You could not find a friend nearly so dear.
Because no matter the trouble she always stayed near...
She has never asked for much from me;
Just to love and respect her, and I think you'll agree,
To give her a good meal plus a nice warm bed is not much to ask;
When she has given me all her love and to her this was no task.
Now I understand you have a schedule to keep.
But I have a small favor before she nods off to sleep.
Please fold your wings around her and let her feel young
while in no pain;
Dear Guardian Angel of Pets, please keep her safe and happy
until I see her again.

Christine as a puppyChristine winning a major from the BBE Class at Astrohall

I bred Amy to Ch. Lamadera's Dusty Daydreamer. This produced AmarettoSun's Silver Lining C.D.,C.G.C., better know to everyone at "Christine". Christine had 12 points including one major. I brought her out for obedience after she was seven years old. She completed her Companion Dog degree in time to go to the 1997 National Specialty in Washington D.C. for Veteran's Obedience. In completing her degree, she scored well enough to be the #5 Obedience Chow for 1997. Though not a Bench Champion by the AKC records, she will always be a Champion in my heart.

Champion Brigadoon's Satisfaction
(Ch. Snodrift's Tonka Toy, OFA X Northhaven's Walkin On Sunshine, OFA)

Mick was finished with two four-point majors, three Bests of Breed over specials, and two Group Placements. He had numerous Bests of Breed and group placements when shown as a special. Mick also enjoyed his trip out of retirement with two Veteran's Group 2s and a Group 4 at the three all-breed shows he went to, as well as Best in Veteran Sweeps at the North Texas Chow Chow Club Specialty Show in March, '98. Mick won the Veteran Dog class at the Rocky Mountain Chow Chow Specialty held the day after the National in June 1999. His last show was the North Texas Chow Chow Club 2000 Spring Specialty where he went Best in Veteran Sweepstakes.
